Maricopa County Residents Can Expect To See Scorpions

The National Pest Management Association publishes its Bug Barometer twice a year, which forecasts the increase in pest activity for a specific period. In the recent release of the spring and summer edition, the NPMA predicted a surge in scorpion activity for property owners in Maricopa County and across the Southwest.

Are scorpions the only pests on the list?

They aren’t, actually. Ants and cockroaches were mentioned as well, but the good news for homeowners is that they aren’t expected to be as big an issue until later in the summer when the rain arrives. So, for now, let’s focus on scorpions and why they’re expected to be a bigger threat this year.

Higher tempers & below-average rainfall could send scorpions inside

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Phoenix and across Arizona will likely be above normal for a while, and there's a 33-40% chance of below-normal precipitation. What does this mean? Well, there’s a good chance scorpions will try to find a moisture source and it could be in your home.

What can you do to keep scorpions and other pests out of your home?

To keep scorpions, ants, roaches, and other pests out of your home this spring and summer, our pest control team recommends the following prevention tips:

  • Seal all entry points, including gaps around your utilities and cracks in your foundation.
  • Make sure exterior doors and garage doors do not have any spaces at the bottom and if so, install door seals.
  • Fill in cracks around windows.
  • Install window and door screens.
  • Remove debris in the yard that could act as hiding places.
  • Fix leaking pipes, dripping faucets, and other moisture problems in your home.
